Just wanted to say thank you to my awesome clients from 2011. Starting in 2012 I am only taking limited sessions due to my crazy, busy schedule of work, school and taking care of my family. So if you are looking to book a session or a wedding please let me know as far in advance as you can.

I am also requring a 50% deposit non-refundable fee for all sessions booked. We will get into that more in 2012.

Wow...where to begin!

I have known these two lovebirds for quite some time.

They will be getting married the end of April...a month from today to be exact :)

My husband turned 30 yesterday....

So this past weekend we all went to the in-laws and had a little get together. Thank you to everyone who attended it meant the world to both of us. You only turn 30 once :)

For his birthday his family and I surprised him with a trip to Myrtle Beach. We started planning it back in January and told him about it 2 weeks ago...he was speechless! But really excited. We leave this Saturday and will be gone for 9 days. I am so excited to finally have a vacation. Between working and going to school I am run down and need some rest and relaxation. Weather isn't looking to great but that's ok...it will be nice to just get away.

Kevin, you are my soul mate, best friend and overall the best husband in the world. I hope you had a fantastic birthday and here's to us sharing many, many more birthdays together! I love you with all my heart

I would like to wish all of my fabulous clients a Happy New Year! Without you I would not be where I am today.

I am officially starting my third year of business and have decided to change a few things. So with that...

There are some big changes coming to Erica Young Photography:

I am increasing my session fees but giving you more bang for your buck :)
Only taking limited session throughout the year (I will be attending school part time and won't have much time to dedicate)
And you as my client are very important to me so the more friends/family you refer the more for your benefit!

Katie and I go wayyy back.

Okay maybe not that far, but maybe about 14-15 yrs back.

I met Katie when I lived out in the country known as Romeo as a kid, I was about 11-12 yrs old.

And when my parents got divorced I moved with my mom back to the city.

That was the roughest move I ever had to make.

I loved living out in the country with fresh air, cows, neighbors that lived more than 2 steps from your yard.

It was great living out there :)

So anyways, through the great technology we have nowadays I met up with all my old friends through Facebook.

And that gave me the chance to photograph Katie, her hubby and her gorgeous kids.

Katie, it was great catching up with you even though we didn't have that much time.

I would love to do it again even if its without my camera ;)

4 Things Your Photographer IS - 4 Things They're NOT

4 Things Your Photographer IS...

1. A Parent ~ Every single family photographer I know is a parent. This means we are used to the hissy fits, the tragic meltdowns and the oil-to-water like aversion your toddler has to the camera. Every time I get an uncooperative toddler the parents apologize profusely for their behavior. Don't sweat it! It makes me feel better that my kids aren't the only ones that think standing still for 3 seconds is akin to getting your limbs ripped off. One simple apology will do just fine.

2. Patient ~ Sometimes it takes 10 mins of running around, dancing like a fool, making silly noises, and talking about crazy monkeys just to get ONE good shot. Don't bother demanding your child to sit and smile because as I'm sure every parent knows, the harder you push a toddler, the harder they push back. And an irritated toddler doesn't give good smiles!

3. Busy ~ Taking pictures isn't the only part of our job. Sometimes it's not our only job at all! Please please please (yes, I'm on my knees begging!) be on time to your shoot. If you aren't going to be on time, at least give us a call and give us your ETA. We may have clients lined up right after you, we may only have a babysitter for a certain amount of time. Whatever the case may be, it's just plain good manners to let us know if you're going to be late. Barring a true, provable emergency, if you don't bother showing up, don't expect your deposit back. Just because we didn't shoot pictures doesn't mean we didn't spend time preparing for your shoot by gathering props, creating a pose list tailored to your shoot, checking the weather and lighting, etc.

4. An Artist ~ Photography is an art, just like painting. Each photographer has their own style. If you don't like what you see on their website, that photographer is not a good fit for you. People who like Picasso like his style. He is unique. Every photographer has their own unique style as well. You should hire your own Picasso. Don't hire any old photographer and request they change their style to what you want. Most photographers have spent years perfecting their style. Asking them to change it is not only insulting but also doesn't give them the necessary years of practice and will likely result in images not nearly as pleasing as you expect. Also, our status of being artists entitles us to be a little kooky and eccentric. It's the fun part of our job description. :-P

4 Things Your Photographer is NOT...

1. Walmart ~ As much as we'd LOVE (I think love isn't quite strong enough a word) to be grossing $405.6 billion per year, we aren't. Heck, I'd love to gross $405.6 thousand per year! But alas, we are all small businesses. We don't have the sales necessary to offer $5 portrait sheets. We also don't utilize cheap ink or poor quality paper just to keep costs down. We charge what we need to to not only keep our business afloat, but also food on our table. If that's outside of your budget, that's perfectly fine. Most photographers fall into the "starving artist" category and can't afford to book themselves, so it's not going to offend us if you can't afford us. It WILL offend us however, if you request us to price match someone else. Our price point is unique because our business is unique. Nobody but nobody is going to have the EXACT SAME costs as anyone else. Please understand that 99% of us aren't priced to be making $100,000 per year, we're priced to afford preschool for our kids, shoes for our feet and food for our bellies. If you want Walmart prices, go to Walmart! Just don't expect personal photographer quality for Walmart prices, and visa versa.

As a subnote to this, we're also not able to give things away for free no matter who you are. Asking us as your friend to "take a few shots of the party/event since you're here" would be like asking your dentist friend to "examine the teeth of all the guests for free since you're here". It's not okay to ask that. If we want to take a few pictures, we will. If we want to send you the pix we take, we will. Unless you're willing to pay our regular rate, please don't ask us to take "just a few pictures". You may get lucky and have a friend with a special friends and family rate, but remember, you wouldn't do your job for free, please don't expect us to do ours for free.

2. Plastic Surgeons ~ Photoshop is an AMAZING tool! Unfortunately, it doesn't substitute for a scalpel. We can easily hide zits, conceal under-eye bags and sometimes even shave off a few pounds here and there. We cannot turn a new-mommy-body into Gisele Bundchen's body with a few key strokes. (And if we could, we'd be in Hollywood making the aforementioned billions!) Moms are expected to have normal size 14-ish bodies, complete with a little pooch belly, and sometime, yes, even the feared double chin. If you can't love yourself the way you are, perhaps getting giant paper printouts of what you look like in all your natural glory isn't the right thing for you right now.

3. Magic ~ We can, in some ways, be thought of as magicians. We can take your memories, your precious children and photograph them in such a way that you will treasure their portraits, the captured moment, forever. But we cannot wave a magic wand and make your sugar-buzzing 3 year old sit still, brush their hair and smile like a Gerber baby. You are paying us for our time and our artistic talent. If someone (who may or may not even be of toddler age *cough* DAD, I'm talking to you!) doesn't want to cooperate, we can only try so hard. You (in most cases) are not obligated to buy prints if you don't like them, but please don't expect to be refunded for the session fee if pictures didn't turn out to your liking through no fault of our own. Please remember, we were out there, trying as hard as possible to get great pictures for you. We deserve to be compensated for our time. Depending on the situation you may even be offered a free or discounted re-shoot, but don't expect anything. Sometimes the child is a lost cause and will refuse to be photographed no matter what the situation. That doesn't say anything to your parenting or how good your child is, that just says your toddler is normal. Toddlers are miniature control freaks and if they don't want something to happen, it wont be happening no matter the bribe!

We also aren't mind readers. If there's a certain something you do or don't want, please tell us! Nicely :-)

4. A Robot ~ We are human. We feel overjoyed when we have a great shoot and we feel devastated when we have a terrible one. There is no need to treat us like anything other than living, breathing humans. We make mistakes sometimes. We don't deserve to be berated or ridiculed because we didn't get the shots you hoped for. When we get a shot you love, tell us! Share your joy! And for the love of pete, BE POLITE! Please and thank you go a loooooong way. I know several photographers that give free gifts and prints to clients that treat them like human friends instead of contracted camera slaves. Besides, it's just good manners :)

Despite all of the fun little intricacies people rarely consider, I still see my job as one of the funnest there is, and I know most of the photographers that inspired me to write this do to. I don't think any of us would trade it for the world. I think our goal is just to remind people that though our job is fun, it's still a job.

I met Lori and her family one Sunday morning at the local park. Since my mom lived right around the corner she decided to come with me. It was nice to get outside for an hour in the nice Fall brisk weather. It was a little chilly but nothing we couldn't handle.

So Lori, her husband and 3 kids we ventured around the park to see what we could find. The kids were great and just watching them do their own thing was fantastic.

{Bits of My Life} University of Michigan Fan Day

Last weekend University of Michigan had a fan day where you can walk around the stadium, get the player's autographs and do pretty much whatever you like.

I was never a fan of football and still to this day don't remember how it all happened but my dad and I started attending games about 2-3 yrs ago. And every year we try to go to at least 1 game...just the 2 of us. You know just father-daughter time. Well last year I got 4 tickets and Kevin came along as well as a friend of my dads and we had so much fun. It was a little chilly in October, especially in Michigan but we handled it. But just last weekend we attended the fan day and I got a few pics.

When I first met this bride she expressed to me how much this wedding meant to her. And especially her husband to be. She brought along her mother with her and as we sat there at Panera Bread and talked about her day and what she wanted out of it. She also expressed the love of cars her fiance has. They have a 1955 Chevy they wanted to incorporate in pictures. I have never worked with a car before in pictures but I was up for the challenge. She also told me that she is 55 yrs old and has never been married before, but has been with her husband for 20 yrs....Congratulations to the both of you and here's to a life of everlasting love :)

It's been FOREVER since I've updated my blog. About a month ago I took some Senior pictures for my cousin Melissa who is actually graduating next month. It was kind of last minute but we had a blast and the images came out great. The very last picture you can't tell but there's a small tiny waterfall behind her. I forgot to change my F-stop until I got home...oops! But it still came out great. Enjoy!

9 Happy, Wonderful Years

So sad I've been slacking on updating my blog.
Yesterday May 5th, aka Cinco de Mayo was my 9th wedding anniversary.
I remember the day I married Kevin.
I was 19, totally head over heels in love.
I was nervous, giddy, excited, nervous, happy, emotional and did I mention nervous.
I hate being the center of attention.
But my wedding day was all about me and I kind of liked that.
Kevin and I were dating since my junior year of high school and 2 years later we were married.
We've had our ups and downs, flips and somersaults but without lots of prayer we wouldn't be where we are today.
We both have jobs, a house we own, cars to drive, food on the table and clothes on our back.
The only thing missing is children. But I know someday, somehow that will happen. I always said when God is ready to give me children, he will make it happen. I have faith!
I am more in love with him today than the day we walked down that aisle together.
Everyone told us getting married so young, we wouldn't last. Well right about now I want to say...boo ya! Haha....
We celebrated last night by going out to an awesome dinner and just loved being together.
Next year is our 10th anniversary and I plan on making it huge. Well I hope to at least renew our vows and have another great party like our 1st wedding.

{Snow} Detroit Area Michigan Photographer

We got hit with some snow (which isn't out of the ordinary for Michigan) these past few days and even though we didn't get as much as some other states it was still crazy!!! I don't mind the snow; really I don't but it's cold, wet, people can't drive in it but it's really pretty to look at. I love looking at branches of trees after a good snowfall. It's so pretty. But needless to say snow and I have a love/hate relationship. I am so ready for Spring/Summer. It can't get here soon enough.

My sister took my nephew who is 13 mths old out for the first time in the snow and he loved it. So I tagged along to document it. It was a little cold for him but he took it like a champ, minus the runny nose ;)

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a good holiday. I haven't posted on here in a while and wanted to update my current clients as well as new clients to some changes coming for the new year.

I will be adding a Session Fee of $75 for all sessions throughout 2010 (and of course wedding prices are different)
Your session must be within 20-25 miles of 48092, anything over that will be an additional charge of $.50/mile
My picture pricing will go up 25%
All sessions will be outdoors as I am a "Natural Light Photographer" excluding newborns
And of course if you are a returning client I will be more than happy to give you a 10% discount on future sessions (will be towards printing prices not sessions fees)

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. I am currently booking for newborn sessions but will resume my regular schedule starting in the Spring.

When I first walked into the room and laid my eyes on Jada, she was perfect. Her beautiful brown hair and when she opened her eyes how blue they were. Jada was a perfect newborn for me. We did have our ups and downs of diaper changing and fussiness but it was all expected. And I loved how especially long her fingers are. They are so cute.

I first met Maile when I moved down to the city with my mother about 14 yrs ago. I have moved so many times in my life so starting a new school was nothing, but I was nervous because it was my last year in middle school (8th grade). She was so nice and we became friends throughout the year. We went off to high school and we didn't become the best of friends but we talked as much as we could. After graduation I lost touch with pretty much everyone I went to high school with. Fast forward about 9 years later and the great thing about technology is Facebook. We found each other through Facebook and became really good friends again.

She was planning on getting married in September and had everything all booked. About 2 weeks before her wedding she found out her photographer was involved in a bad accident and couldn't photograph her wedding. She was devastated and stressed out at the same time. She called me freaking out and I told her I would be so happy and honored to photograph her wedding. Besides we would be there anyways to help her celebrate so why not.

Maile & Bryan I wish you many years of love and happiness and hope we stay the best of friends.

{Little Miss Kaity} Sneak Peek

I met the {D} family over the weekend and Little Miss Kaity had no problems with my camera in front of her face. Her brother on the other hand was not liking it. We will get to those later. These 2 stood out as I was going over the pictures and I love them. Laurie, it was great meeting you and your family. I'm sorry things didn't go as planned but let's see what I can come up with. {Lisa & Darin's Wedding}

The maid of honor was one of my best friends in high school. She casually mentioned to me that her best friend was getting married but already had a photographer booked. A few weeks later I received an email from a bride asking about my services and it was Lisa. We emailed back and forth and finally I was booked for her wedding! Lisa was very organized and already had her own list of people that she wanted photographed on her big day. I was very surprised by that but glad she was organized and knew what she wanted. On her big day I got to the reception hall early where she was there making sure everything was the way she wanted it. There were a few snags along the way but in the end it was perfect.

I have seen fellow photographers following this trend and today I received a phone call from someone who saw my ad on craiglist and wanted to know if I did this. (Believe it or not but I receive most of my business from craigslist and I love it!) So I told this client I was actually thinking about doing this but haven't made a decision yet. After I hung up with her I got to thinking and thought what the heck, let's do it. It could bring more business and the experience would be awesome. So in the next few days I will be coming out with my new....

The Bennett's just moved here from Virginia in April; Steve is stationed at Selfridge Air Base. I met the Bennett family on a Saturday morning. It was raining the night before so I got up early the following morning and watched the weather channel, praying the rain had passed. I was lucky, it did. So I met them at George George Memorial Park in Clinton Twp, and it was fun capturing the boys playing and mom and dad so in love. Here's some of my faves from their session.

I am a wife, sister, daughter, niece and friend.

I have been married for 8 years to the love of my life and he is also my best friend. We were told that we can't have children but we have never given up faith. We know it will happen one day and God knows when the right time will be for us. But in the meantime we have 3 pets; 2 dogs Riley & Smokey and 1 cat Jack. They mean everything to us and wouldn't give them up for the world. My husband and I recently started attending church and are dedicating our lives to the Lord. Since we have been going it's flipped our world upside down and we love everything about it. I can't think of anywhere else I would want to be on a Sunday morning.

I am a firm believer in if you have a dream, you should follow it. No matter what anyone else tells you. Photography wasn't always a dream of mine but I always loved doing it. Now I couldn't dream of anything else more that I love to do. And I can't wait to see where this dream of mine is going to take me. It's all in God's hands now!
